Irish Farm

Sitting room
View from house

We bought Irish Farm at the end of 2001 and set about completely renovating it. This included installing central heating, damp proofing and new electrics and plumbing. Whilst we wanted to create a home with modern comforts we also tried hard to maintain the character of the house. This involved uncovering the two granite fireplaces in the sitting room, stripping all the pine and even putting in older fittings, as in the bathroom with the Edwardian roll top bath and in the cloakroom downstairs which now has an original basin and loo.

We have quite an eclectic taste in furniture and the house is a mixture of old pine, Chinese and Indian furnishings again adding their own character to the accommodation.

We also love traditional beds and the accommodation has gorgeous bedrooms. Each one has its' own character and of course include our favourite Egyptian cotton linen. When we decided on letting the house for self catering holidays, we wanted sumptuous beds which guests would love to throw themselves into after a hard day at the beach or sightseeing! From the master and second bedrooms the views are far reaching and are wonderful to wake to in the mornings.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped and is furnished with reclaimed pine units housing a Belfast sink, dishwasher and stainless steel washing machine. A lovely old scrubbed pine table, Welsh dresser and a butchers block complete the picture. We didn't want a fitted kitchen again trying to keep things original was our priority. But a stainless steel fridge, washing machine and range were must haves - 21st century essentials!

This year we have carried out a comprehensive garden project. This included installing a new conservatory from where in the comfort of stylish wicker furniture and fresh floral fabrics, one can drink in the views. Eat your breakfast, have a gin and tonic or just sit and enjoy the fantastic situation of Irish Farm and it's breathtaking views.

From the conservatory step out onto the terrace and ha ha ( a platform from where one can additionally enjoy the views). We used all the slate flagstones found around the property for this terrace and built the ha ha using granite again reclaimed from the farm. Wherever you are standing, sitting or lying in this area you cannot help but be impressed by the 180 degree vista.

The side garden is lawned with lovely beds and at the rear of the house a water feature tinkles away, soothing and tranquil. In the summer this area can be quite a suntrap and with its lovely pots creates quite a Mediterranean feeling.

On the terrace there is a wooden table, directors chairs and parasol. As the house is South facing this is the ideal place to relax, glass in hand , soaking up the beautiful Bodmin Moor sunset. In the back garden there is additional seating with Lloyd Loom chairs and two decorative French garden benches.
